ADHD Referrals for Adults
The ICB will only commission new ADHD referrals for individuals aged under 25, including Independent Sector Right to Choose organisations and Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust (CWPT).
• ADHD assessments and treatments will be commissioned only for providers meeting the requirements outlined in the new ADHD policy.
• The ICB will also not commission new assessments for individuals aged 25 and above. However, this will not affect adults who have already been referred.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects people’s behaviour, causing restlessness, trouble concentrating, and impulsive actions. While most cases are diagnosed in childhood, there are a growing number of adults seeking diagnosis.
In Coventry and Warwickshire, our current ADHD assessment system is not working effectively—particularly for children. We currently have over 7500 children and young people waiting for an ADHD assessment and waiting times for some children will be in excess of 10 years. This is unacceptable and clearly signals the need for a different approach.
Clinical experts advise that the impact of an ADHD diagnosis is significantly more profound for children. For many children, a diagnosis can be life-changing—helping them stay in school, develop social skills, succeed in exams, and learn how to function and thrive in society. By contrast, most adults have already developed coping mechanisms for their ADHD, and while diagnosis and access to medication can be beneficial in some cases, the impact is generally less transformative. The Integrated Care Board (ICB) have reviewed the system and as of 22nd May 2025, we are unable to refer patients aged 25 and over for an ADHD assessment under the NHS – this includes Right to Choose referrals.
We understand this may be disappointing and upsetting for some patients. Where patients are unhappy, the ICB is keen to hear and address their concerns. Please direct them to the ICB dedicated webpage – Complaining about CWICB – Happy Healthy Lives
